The Magic of Red Wine – Resveratrol
By
Like to live 25 years longer ? Like to feel 25 years younger? Well, I certainly would! The latest buzz in the news is all about a wonderful substance in red wine that may help you do just that. That substance is called resveratrol.
This is a very potent antioxidant polyphenol that was first found in 1963 and since then over 2000 scientific research papers have been published regarding its unique properties. Laboratory studies have demonstrated potential health benefits like cell repair, cancer prevention, and lowering of blood pressure.
Resveratrol has also recently been shown to increase the life span of laboratory animals and researchers suggest this may have the same effect in humans. One of the world’s leading anti-aging researchers from Harvard University, Dr. David Sinclair, has this to say: Resveratrol is naturally found in not only grapes but also blueberries and peanuts. There is more in red wine than white wine because the grape skins which contain the resveratrol are utilized in the wine making process in red wines but not in white wines. Resveratrol is actually a part of the plants defense system in warding off environmental threats, yeasts and other microbes. As assaults increase so does resveratrol. The grape variety containing the highest amount of resveratrol is the muscadine grape. These grapes are found primarily in the southeast section of the the US and are very unique in that they have an extra chromosome. They also are very large in comparison to other grapes and can be as large as a quarter. One company in particular has taken the research a step further and combined resveratrol with other powerful polyphenols into a unique blend that is 10 times more powerful than resveratrol alone. Have you had a chance to watch 60 Minutes or Barbra Walters segments last weekend about it?
It show promise in mice. For mice, has shown major health improvements including blood sugar control. Keep in mind that 6 out of 10 major drug successes in mice – fail in humans. But the limited human trials showed promise and there are some patients that claim it helps. However, this could be the ‘placebo effect,’ and only empirical data under controlled experiments can tell for sure. It will take a few years for these clinical trials to conclude.
You can get supplements of the extract right now. While it is safe, it is not guaranteed to work. Before making a decision, you should watch all the videos.
I did some research and learned the following: You can only get 1-2mgs of it in a single bottle of wine. So, white, it’s a good excuse to drink wine, but you really won’t get much benefit. There are resveratrol supplements on the market – but many do not have the required strength and they don’t work for everyone. The only way to know for sure is to try the supplements. Hope you find this interesting… its a future hope for the fountain of youth and treatments (not cures) for countless diseases.
